SculptFest 2017 – “The State of Hope”

Title of the sculpture: “New Dimension”
The project assumes combining the existing marble sculpture „Eve” that I carved 3 years ago during my Artists Residency in Carving Studio and Sculpture Center with a new piece that I sculpted this summer in Poland. In the very middle of the statue, there is an opening, a hole that was designed as an integral part of the piece. The opening itself symbolizes the hope, the new possibilities. However, it could have also been interpreted as the situation when something is missed, a lack of some element. This is the state that is similar to the state of hope – expecting something new to happen. Now, after 3 years of my absence, the new meaning is added to the statue by installing a small-sized miniature sculpture – a simplified shape of a human embryo. Modeled in wax in Poland and brought we me on a symbolical journey back to the place, where the main statue was carved. Symbol of the new life, new hope, new times, new possibilities.
In the light of our disturbing times we live in, it brings the human being to the pedestal, it brings attention to the value of human life. The specific placemat of the embryo sculpture inside the marble will require from the viewer the special attention, a little effort, the need to approach the piece closely, to bend and have a look inside the whole, in order to see the new value – new element hidden inside. In the same way, I believe, us humans should take en effort to seek for hope and personal power within own inside. It requires special attention, slowing down, stopping for a while and listening to own inner voice. There is always a light of hope and hidden power of spirit that can be found within the human being. It’s a personal persistence, a belief, that even if one day life seems empty, tomorrow can suddenly bring a new value and new meaning. The power of human spirit is to never give up, always move on, take another step and always stay full of hope.
